Interpretation

Sharpley & Stone (2009, p113.) indicate that 'effective interpretation may serve to enhance the visitor experience, bringing a 'death' site or attraction to 'life'. From this it suggests that modern museums have now become visitor-focussed leisure and educational centres which has lead to the term 'edutainment' being brought forward. The management issue with regards to this is to ensure that the 9/11 museum does not lose its identity by becoming too modernised.

Technology

One must start by informing the reader that interpretation at dark tourism sites has benefited from changes in technological advances Sharpley & Stone (2009). Across many sites new technology is emerging and sites are adapting their exhibitions to 'change with the times' so to speak. In doing this though, the issue lays within how the required message will be interpreted by the visitors.

Within the 9/11 museum many of these technological advances are evident. A few images on this page show just a few examples of what's on offer. Touch screen exhibitions, ipad tours, audio tours in several languages, videos and films and interactive exhibits are all on show within the museum. In addition to this, visitor's are also encouraged to download the 9/11 memorial apps onto their smartphones which are available free of charge. Stone and Sharpley (2009, p. 115) recognize the need to maintain the dignity of people that the site or attraction commemorates through its interpretation. In argument of this, although the site does encourage visitor's to check-in and hashtag themselves at the venue, purely as a marketing incentive. The museum does consist of powerful and overwhelming exhibits, where filming and photography is strictly prohibited. In doing this, the stories and information that is taken in within these restricted zones is interpreted in a way which respects the dead.

Edutainment

The museum at the 9/11 site also acts as an educational centre inspiring and educating children of today, about the historic event's that radically altered the world, Sharpley & Stone (2012). When dealing with the issue of children at the site it is essential that the management are aware of how the information is going to be interpreted. All children who visit the site today were not alive to relate to the events and so being rely first hand on information being given to them.
